Hersonissos |
Description:
English, Irish and Dutch, beer in hand, from morning onwards. Pubs, bars and clubs packed together producing a constant acoustic pandemonium, boys chatting up young English girls, drunks staggering along the pavement, gypsy children selling roses.
In summer Hersonisos never rests. Tourism brings life to the area dominates everything. As long as the beer and spirits keep flowing the young generation will be happy to keep coming back for more drunken and wild nights at Hersonisos.
If this dissolute environment has left you with any desire for sightseeing, then you should walk along the coast road to see Sarakino, a remarkable fountain from Roman period. There is also the very picturesque mid-Byzantine, two-aisled church of Agios Georgios, with a vaulted roof, on the little promontory west of Hersonissos.
You should also visit the three traditional villages above Hersonissos, Ano Hersonisos, Piskopiano and Koutouloufari, built among the olive groves at the foot of imposing Mt.Charakas, still retain the unspoiled character and atmosphere of Crete’s traditional villages.
In the Piskopiano village there is also a Rural Museum, housed in a wonderful stone building with tools and implements used in local agricultural life.
In Hersoniso you will also find “Lychnostatis” of Cretan traditional life and folk culture. A wonderful museum which uses all sorts of means to help the visitor experience the traditional life of Crete.
Built entirely from natural materials, it has a number of areas: a rural house, a workshop, windmill, church, shepherd’s hut, wood stove e.t.c.
You can enjoy the audio-visual presentations on Crete’s traditions and natural wealth and then sit in the café and enjoy a traditional herbal tea.
