More people fly from Athens Airport with Olympic Airways and Aegean Airlines, which has cheap, fast, domestic flights from Athens to Sitia on the east, Heraklion in the center, and Chania on the west. Reservations are necessarily in the High Season. In the summer Olympic Airways and Aegean Airlines also offer services between Heraklion and Corfu, Mykonos, Rhodes, Santorini and Thessalonica.

There is also a new Crete jet line called Sky Express. It has direct flights from Heraklio to Rhodos, Santorini, Mykonos, Samos, Chios,Kos,Lesvos and some other islands during the summer which make the connection between Crete and other islands more easy. Also the prices are low.

Charter flights from Europe are quite numerous from the end of April until the end of October. There are a lot more flights to Heraklion (East) than to Chania (West), making them often cheaper (and not as heavily booked) as flights to Chania.

There are also lots of charter flights to Athens, so you can take a boat from there to Crete or find connect flight with Olympic or Aegean to Heraklion. This is easy since there are 5-6 flights of each company daily all year around.
